Lapid criticizes racist calls in the “Flags March”

Hundreds of hardline Israeli nationalists, chanting “Death to Arabs,” marched across East Jerusalem on Tuesday, threatening to reignite violence after weeks of war against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. Palestinians in Gaza responded by launching incendiary balloons that set at least 10 fires in southern Israel.

Dozens of young men jumping and waving their fists in the air chanted, “Death to the Arabs!” Their anti-Arab chants also included “Let your village burn!”

In a strong condemnation via Twitter, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid wrote, tweeting that those who chant racist slogans are “a disgrace to the people of Israel,” adding, “The fact that there are extremists for whom the Israeli flag is a symbol of hatred and racism is repugnant and cannot be tolerated.”
