Intel Macs Lack the Best Features of macOS Monterey

Apple’s next big macOS update, macOS Monterey, adds a bunch of new features. But some of the more interesting features won’t be coming to Macs based on Intel processors, according to Apple.

Apple released the first Macs with the M1 chipset in November 2020. This includes any model MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac.

On the macOS Monterey Features page, the fine print indicates that several features require a Mac with an M1 chip.

Here are the new features that you won’t be able to use in macOS Monterey:

  • FaceTime Portrait Mode: that blurs the background behind you while you’re on a video call.
  • Live Text: Allows you to copy and paste, search or translate text within images.
  • New interactive 3D globe view in Maps.
  • More detailed maps of cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, and London in the Maps app.
  • Text-to-speech in more languages, including Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish.
  • Dictation on the device that makes all processing operations happen offline.
  • Unlimited keyboard dictation (previously dictation was limited to 60 seconds).

macOS Monterey and Mac computers:

Apple hasn’t explained why none of these features are available on Intel-based Macs.

Google Earth has long offered an interactive 3D globe across Intel-based Macs, both via the web and in the app.

Apple is currently in a two-year transition from Intel processors to Apple’s custom silicon chips in Mac computers. The change is scheduled to be completed by WWDC 2022.

Macs equipped with the M1 chip have proven to be much faster than their Intel counterparts, with even the base model MacBook Air with the M1 chip outperforming the 16-inch Intel-based MacBook Pro.

It is widely rumored that Apple is planning to redesign the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with support for a faster chip than the M1 chip later this year.

macOS Monterey is still compatible with a variety of Intel-based Macs and is now available in developer beta. The software update will likely be released publicly to all users sometime between September and November.
