Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in the European Cup finals, after scoring his tenth and eleventh goals in a late victory over Hungary 3-0 in Budapest, on Tuesday, in the opening group F competition, overtaking Frenchman Michel Platini (9).
Ronaldo also became the first player in history to participate in five editions of the continental championship, during which he scored all of them to surpass Platini, who scored his nine goals in the 1984 edition in France.
The Portuguese star has also become the European player with the most matches in major tournaments (European Cup and World Cup), raising the number of his participation to 39 matches.
Ronaldo (36 years and 130 days) became the oldest player in the continental finals to score two goals in one match, surpassing Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko (35 years and 256 days) when he scored two goals against Sweden in the 2012 edition.
He also raised his tally of international goals to 106 in 176 matches and is now three goals away from the absolute record set by Iranian Ali Daei.
“The important thing was to win,” Ronaldo, who was named man of the match, said of his achievement. It was a tough match, Hungary were a tough opponent for 90 minutes. We scored 3 goals and I am very grateful to the team that helped me score the double.”
He continued, noting the importance of winning, “It is very vital that we start in a positive way in order to raise the confidence level. Now we have to win the next match” against Germany, on Saturday, in Munich.
Despite the wide win, it was achieved only in the last eight minutes of the match, where full-back Rafael Guerrero opened the scoring in the 84th minute, then Ronaldo added his two goals in the 87th minute from a penalty kick and 90 + 2.
Puskas Arena in Hungary has become the first stadium to receive the public at its full capacity (68 thousand spectators), since the outbreak of the Corona virus 15 months ago.
The three points against Hungary are very important because this group of death also includes the giants, France, the world champions, and Germany.
Portugal also put an end to a run of 11 unbeaten Hungary matches in recent months.
