The German national team coach, Joachim Loew, had his full squad of 26 players, who all participated in the team’s first training session today, Thursday, at his camp in the town of Herzogenaurach, in preparation for the European Championship (Euro 2020).

“For a coach, it’s great to be able to call up all the players,” German Football Association director Oliver Bierhoff told a news conference.

Bierhoff said Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka “can train with the ball and with the team” after recovering from a thigh injury, but his physical condition will be monitored.

Goritska will not enter the accounts of the technical staff in the first match of the tournament against the French team, the world champion, which is scheduled to be held next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to extend her best wishes to the team in the continental championship through a video call planned with the team today, Thursday.

Before the virtual meeting with Merkel, who will step down next September, Bierhoff said: “It’s coach Joachim Loew’s last tournament, and it’s also her last.”

“It is a tradition for the German chancellor to wish the team good luck, which of course is a huge sign of appreciation,” Bierhoff added.

On the other hand, Ilkay Gundogan, the German national team midfielder, indicated in a press conference that he is still suffering after his team Manchester City lost the Champions League final against Chelsea, but stressed that the repercussions of that match may help Germany in the euro.

“It is not easy, frankly. You have been working for it for a year, and I personally have worked for it for eight years,” Gundogan said, referring to his former club, Borussia Dortmund, lost the Champions League final in 2013 against arch-rivals Bayern Munich.

“That is why the disappointment is so great for me on a personal level. But the beautiful thing about football is that there is always another match,” Gundogan added.

The German national team can now benefit from the momentum obtained by Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger, the Chelsea trio, after winning the Champions League with the English team.

“Kai’s crowning goal can give a huge boost after his first season, which was not so easy in England, which we can also invest as a team,” Gundogan said.

The German national team aspires to be the only team with the most European Championship titles, which it currently shares with Spain with three titles.

The machine team plays in Group F in the group stage of the tournament, accompanied by Portugal (the defending champion) and Hungary, in addition to France.
