New York, USA (CNN) – A US Navy fighter has taken off from the British aircraft carrier “Queen Elizabeth” on a combat mission in the Middle East, for the first time that a US warplane has taken off from a foreign aircraft carrier since World War II.

This came, according to the British Ministry of Defense, on Tuesday.

The mission for which the American fighter took off was against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, or what is known as “ISIS”, and also considered the first operation of the British aircraft carrier, which is the largest of the British Royal Navy’s ships, and also the first operation of British aircraft carriers in 10 years.

The last time an American fighter on a combat mission took off from a foreign aircraft carrier was in 1943, when American fighters took off from the British aircraft carrier Victorious in the South Pacific, Captain James Blackmore, the wing commander aboard the British aircraft carrier said.
