Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticized Ukraine after its European Cup team put Crimea, which came under Russian sovereignty in 2014, on the map on his shirt.

“There is nothing new here. The position of the Ukrainian authorities on Crimea is well known. They despise the popular will of the Crimean compatriots,” Putin said in comments carried by public television.

Putin considered that Ukraine’s behavior “is not entirely in line with the concept of democracy.”
