His Excellency Eng. Youssef Al Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for the Electricity, Water and Future Energy Sector, stressed that the UAE has established its global position in the field of clean energy that supports environmental sustainability, thanks to legislation and laws that strengthened the sector, encouraged investments, and which kept pace with current developments and future challenges, and ambitious specialized initiatives. The National Energy and Water Demand Management Program, and the State Electricity Market Project, to provide electric energy with high efficiency and effectiveness at more competitive prices, in addition to setting ambitious goals for the future, through the development of the National Energy Strategy 2050, through which the state seeks to reduce Energy demand by 40%, and the contribution of clean energy to the total energy mix produced in the country to 50%, which as a whole supports and develops the UAE’s goals to enhance environmental sustainability, preserve climate, reduce global warming, and reduce carbon emissions, through Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 70%.
Al Ali said: “The UAE has continued its ambitious plans in the field of energy and water through the adoption by the Council of Ministers of the National Program for Energy and Water Demand Management and Consumption Rationalization in March 2021, which in turn represents a national action plan that brings together all the concerned authorities in the UAE, to achieve the most important goals Announced in the Energy Strategy 2050, which is based on raising the efficiency of individual and institutional consumption by 40%, and raising the contribution of clean energy in the total energy mix produced in the country to 50% by 2050, and the Water Security Strategy 2036, as well as reducing the total demand for water resources by 21%, reducing the water scarcity index by 3 degrees, and increasing the reuse of treated water to 95%.”
He added: “In the UAE, and in cooperation with our strategic partners locally, regionally and globally, we aim to harness innovation, modern technology and the Fourth Industrial Revolution to develop the energy, electricity and water sectors, and enhance investment in these sectors to serve the UAE’s direction for the next fifty years and support its global leadership.
He continued: “The UAE has expanded the exploitation of solar energy, as our production capacity at the present time from this source reaches 3108 megawatts, which represents the cheapest form of energy available and supports the energy mix in the Emirates, and we have many projects that support the UAE’s future orientation towards clean energy, Including the Al Dhafra solar power plant with a production capacity of 2 gigawatts, and Barakah peaceful nuclear power plants with a capacity of 4 units, with a production capacity of 5600 megawatts, and thus the UAE will be the first country in the world to build 4 nuclear power plants at the same time and the same project, and it is worth mentioning that The first reactor with a capacity of 1,400 megawatts was commissioned in the third quarter of 2020, as well as the desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain.
In turn, Engineer Hind Al Mutawa, Director of the Department of Electricity and Energy Trade, and Eng. Mona Al Amoudi, Director of the Department of Future Energy, shed light on the objectives of the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036, which was formulated from a national perspective to cover all elements of the water supply chain in the country for the next twenty years, and aimed at ensuring the sustainability of Continuity of access to water during normal and extreme emergency conditions, a reduction in the total demand for water resources by 21%, an increase in the water productivity index to $110 per cubic meter, a reduction in the water scarcity index by 3 degrees, and an increase in the reuse of treated water to 95%, Providing a storage capacity for two days of storage for normal cases in the water system, which contributes to the prosperity and prosperity of society and the sustainability of the growth of the national economy.
They pointed out that the strategy will contribute to rationalizing spending by more than 74 billion dirhams, in addition to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 100 million tons from desalination plants. They also set the guidelines for the policy of the water sector in the UAE, aiming to develop sustainable water supply sources, especially By expanding membrane-based desalination, expanding the use of renewable energy in the water sector, maximizing the reuse of recycled water, while prioritizing investments in water use efficiency, reducing non-revenue water, and behavioral change, based on effective measures in terms of the cost.
They stressed the need to integrate demand-side improvements into water supply planning, as well as to conserve and protect non-renewable groundwater as a strategic stockpile, encourage innovation, effective information management and knowledge-sharing in addressing risks of national importance, and support integrated management of water resources across sectors and (regional and national) scales from Through improving governance, investing in institutional capabilities, and implementing integrated plans that improve flexibility and national costs.
