A new study revealed that the use of e-cigarettes may be associated with higher rates of infection with the Corona virus, and researchers found that lung cells exposed to fluids from e-cigarettes appeared to be more susceptible to the spike protein that the Corona virus uses to enter and infect cells, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.

The research team, from the University of North Carolina, USA, said that nicotine in e-cigarette liquid causes interaction and ease of penetration of the Corona virus into lung cells.

Many people used to think that e-cigarettes are safer than cigarettes smoking Ordinary due to lack of tobacco in e-cigarettes.

The research team took samples from the cells lining the lungs. Then, they exposed half of the cells to a liquid from e-cigarettes before exposing all the cells to a harmless virus that was covered with the spike protein, which resembles the “nails” that the Corona virus uses to enter human cells.

The researchers observed higher rates of infection in lung cells treated with the e-cigarette liquid, compared to other cells, according to a study report published on the website. bioRxiv.

“We hypothesize that nicotine may be responsible for the increased spike protein binding and subsequent virus infection; however, the underlying mechanisms and alleged association with nicotine will require additional study,” the authors wrote in the study.

E-cigarette devices are largely blamed for the recent increase in nicotine use by teens and young adults.

And in 2020, nearly 40 percent of high school students who smoke nicotine regularly were using an e-cigarette, according to a report from Tobacco Free Kids American.
