Headaches, sore throat and runny nose are currently the most common symptoms associated with Covid-19 infection in Britain, researchers said.
Tim Spector, the supervisor of the “Zhou” study on the symptoms of Covid infection, added that infection with the virus from the “Delta” strain can feel as if it was a “severe cold” for young people.
Although they may not feel very ill, they can carry infections and put others at risk.
Everyone who thinks they have Covid must get medical tests.
The British National Health Service says that the typical symptoms of Covid that citizens should monitor are: coughing, high body temperature, and loss of smell or taste.
However, Spector says that these symptoms are now less common, based on data obtained by the Zhou study team from thousands of people who registered their symptoms on an application.
He says, “Since the beginning of May, we have been monitoring the most prominent symptoms among users of the application, and they are not the same among them.”
The disparity appears to be related to the increased incidence of the “delta” strain, which was first detected in India, and currently accounts for 90 percent of Covid cases in Britain.
Spector says high body temperature is still a very common symptom, but loss of smell is no longer among the top 10 symptoms.
“This strain appears to function somewhat differently,” he adds.
“People might think they’ve had some kind of seasonal cold, keep going to parties, and they might spread the infection to six other people,” he says.
“The message is if you’re young, you’ll have milder symptoms anyway,” he says.
“It may feel like it’s just a cold or a strange feeling, but stay home and get a medical checkup,” he says.
Similarly, the Imperial College London study, which included more than a million people in England when the other “alpha” strain was dominant, detected a wide range of additional symptoms related to Covid.
The infection was closely associated with symptoms such as chills, loss of appetite, headache, and muscle aches, in addition to the classic symptoms.
A government recommendation says that the main symptoms of Covid are:
- A new persistent cough.
- Severe high temperature.
- Loss or change in the sense of smell or taste.
“There are many other symptoms associated with COVID-19,” the recommendation adds.
She said, “These other symptoms may have another cause and are not alone a reason to conduct tests to detect infection with Covid-19.”
“If you are concerned about symptoms, you should see a doctor,” she added.
