At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last year, Apple announced that it would allow you to sign in to websites on Safari using Face ID and Touch ID. This year, the company is taking the technology a step further by introducing passwordless signups.

In a developer session titled “Bypassing Passwords”, Apple unveiled a new technology called Passkeys that will allow you to sign up for services without any passwords, according to TheNextWeb.

Here’s how it works: When you visit a website that supports this new technology, you’ll enter the username you want during registration, then use Face ID or Touch ID – instead of a password – to authenticate yourself Passkeys will be available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac later From this year as a tech preview, so it will be turned off by default.

Passkeys tech is part of the iCloud Keychain and is based on the FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance’s WebAuthn protocol. Notably, Apple joined the alliance last year to support passwordless authentication.

As Apple’s scheme points out, this is a very secure method of authentication and prevents you from falling victim to a phishing attack, however if you have devices outside of Apple’s ecosystem, this technology may not work and you will have to go back to the passwords.

Google and Microsoft already support passwordless logins with biometric authentication or hardware keys like Yubico. In March, Microsoft noted that more than 200 million accounts are already using a login method that does not include passwords.

Aside from enabling registrations with Face ID and Touch ID, Apple has also built APIs for hardware security keys in macOS Monterey and iOS 15.
