A release date was not immediately announced. It looks like web features will be rolling out with iOS 15 in the fall.
Apple has announced a number of other FaceTime updates coming in iOS 15 as well. There’s a new grid view option, a sound isolation feature to improve audio quality, support for spatial audio, and a background blur option with Portrait Mode.
There is also a major new feature called SharePlay. SharePlay will allow a group of people to watch or listen to the same thing simultaneously. The feature allows you to pull songs and videos or share your screen. There are some major names to support the feature, including Disney Plus, Hulu, and HBO. Max and Twitch, supported by Apple Music and Apple TV Plus.
Virtual watch parties have become commonplace during the pandemic, and SharePlay is spreading, showing that Apple hopes to turn FaceTime into a hangout space and not just a way to make convenient video calls with your relatives.
