Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt will miss the opening match of the European Championship against Ukraine on Sunday.Dutch coach Frank de Boer announced that Matthijs de Ligt is not ready to play the team’s opening match in the European Championship.
De Boer did not say who would replace the Juventus defender in the starting line-up for the team’s opening match at Euro 2020.Commenting on the Dutch defender’s return to his team, de Boer explained: “It’s a bit early. We don’t want to take any risks. We have two more games in the group.”
De Boer expected that de Ligt would be ready for the next match against Austria on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.De Ligt is recovering from a thigh injury but has been training with the team in recent days, having said earlier this week that he hopes to be able to play on Sunday in the first major game for the Netherlands since the 2014 World Cup.
In addition to De Ligt’s absence, the Netherlands will be missing center back and captain Virgil van Dijk due to a knee injury.
It is worth noting that the Netherlands are scheduled to play all their matches in Group C, at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, in Amsterdam.
