The leader of the Indian opposition, Rahul Gandhi, called for a general isolation and closure, with the total number of Coronavirus infections in the country exceeding the twenty million mark.
During this second deadly wave, which is witnessing the largest increase in the number of infections in the world, India recorded ten million new cases in just over four months, while it recorded the first ten million infections over a period of more than ten months.
The Indian Ministry of Health data showed that 357,229 new cases were recorded during the past twenty-four hours, while deaths increased by 3,449, bringing the overall total to 222408.
Medical experts say the real numbers in India (deaths and injuries) may be five to ten times higher than the official toll.
Rahul Gandhi, a member of parliament for the opposition Indian Congress Party, said on Twitter: “The only way to stop the spread of the Corona now is for a complete closure .. The failure of the Indian government to act kills many innocent people.”
The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reluctant to impose a general lockdown and closure, fearing the economic repercussions, but some Indian states have imposed social restrictions of their own.
The increase in the number of cases of Covid-19 in India coincides with a sharp decline in vaccination operations there, due to the presence of problems in supply and delivery. The country has only managed to vaccinate 9.5 percent of its 1.35 billion people, with at least one vaccine dose.
