Young Slovenian Luka Doncic “Triple Double” with 31 points, 20 assists and 12 rebounds led the Mavericks to a dramatic 125-124 victory over the Washington Wizards, and rose to fifth place at the expense of defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA.
This was the first “Triple Double” for Duncic (22 years) since March 15 to lead the Mavericks to their sixth victory in their last seven matches.
“Everyone expects this greatness from him every night,” Dallas coach Rick Carlyle said after the win. Just think of it, he’s twenty-two and there are so many expectations of him every night. He’s a great player.
“He’s doing an amazing job of enduring and absorbing all of that.”
Dorian Finney-Smith scored the decisive hat-trick with a pass from Doncic nine seconds before the end in front of some 4,300 spectators allowed to be at the “American Airlines Center” in Texas as restrictions continued due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Finney-Smith ended the match with 22 points, against 17 for Alakani Maxi Clipper and 16 for Tim Hardaway in favor of the Mavericks, who scored his 36th victory this season compared to 27 defeats.
On the losing side, Russell Westbrook’s record record this season with 42 points spared the Wizards a second loss in their last 12 games.
Doncic scored a brace 34 seconds ago, equaling 122-122. Bradley Bell, who finished off with 29 points, returned the visitors’ lead with two free throws 26 seconds before Doncic passed the ball to Finny-Smith, who scored the decisive hat-trick.
A hat-trick by Bale had failed in the last two seconds that would have gifted his team.
Nine matches before the end of the regular season, the Lakers (36 wins and 27 defeats) find themselves in sixth place, one seat away from the seventh occupied by the Portland Trailblazers (35 wins and 28 defeats), who are in the play-offs to qualify for the playoffs.
The Denver Nuggets snatched third place in the western region of the Los Angeles Clippers by dropping 110-104, and Utah Jazz regained the western lead from the Phoenix Suns by beating the Toronto Raptors 106-102.
The Golden State Warriors boosted their hopes of playing the “Playoff” extension, by beating Houston Rockets 113-87, leading to ninth in the West at the expense of San Antonio Spurs and approaching the eighth Memphis Grizzlies with the latter falling to the Orlando Magic 112-111.
The Oklahoma City Thunder lost ground to the Indiana Pacers 95-152.
