A huge study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology revealed the effect of body weight on the risk of severe complications from the Corona virus, by examining the effect of the body mass index and its relationship to the severity of symptoms for people with Corona, according to what was reported on the Medical Express website.
The study, which was based on more than 6.9 million people living in England, and included data from more than 20 thousand patients infected with Coronavirus, who had been hospitalized or died during the first wave, found that those infected with a body mass index higher than 23 kg / M, they may have more complications than others.
The researchers indicated that the risk of entering the intensive care unit was 10% higher for every unit increase in body mass index, as the effect of excess weight on the risk of infection with severe corona virus was greater in young people between the ages of 20 and 39 years, while it decreased after the age of 60 .
The study also indicated that increasing the body mass index had a very little effect on the risk of severe corona infection in people over the age of 80 years.
The researchers emphasized that even very modest excess weight is associated with a greater risk of severe complications from Corona, and the risks rise sharply with an increase in BMI, as it was found that the risks associated with excess weight are greater in people under the age of 40 years, while weight has little or no effect. On the chances of contracting the acute virus after the age of 80.
These results indicate that priority should be given to vaccination for people with HIV ObesityEspecially now that the vaccine has been launched for younger age groups, given that obesity is associated with more serious outcomes after infection with the Coronavirus.
The researchers explained that the risk of severe consequences from the Corona virus gradually increased, above a body mass index of 23 kg / m2, in addition to other factors, including type 2 diabetes.
The study also discussed the effect of low-weight people on the severity of the symptoms of Corona, as it was noted that people who had a BMI of less than 18.5 kg, also suffered from severe complications when infected with the virus.
