And these stars are among the largest and brightest, with only a few million years old – compared to our star’s 10 billion years old.

AG Carinae is a few million years old, is located 20,000 light-years away within our Milky Way galaxy, and is expected to live for up to six million years.

The star is believed to be about 70 times the mass of the sun and a million times more luminous than our star, and major eruptions such as the one that produced the nebula in the new Hubble image occur multiple times, and are launched when it is in danger of self-destruction.
