On Tuesday, the Chadian president died of wounds sustained at the front in fighting against the rebels, in the north of the country, over the weekend, an army spokesman told state television.
“The President of the Republic took his last breaths, defending the territorial integrity and safety on the battlefield, and we announce with great sorrow to the Chadian people the news of the death of Marichal Chad,” said the spokesman, General Azm Bermando Aguna, in a statement read on Chad TV.
After that, the army announced the imposition of a curfew and the closure of the country’s borders, and promised to hold “democratic” elections after an 18-month transitional period in the country.
According to a statement by the Chadian army, a military council led by President Idriss Déby’s son will run the country after his father was killed.
The death of Déby, who ruled Chad with an iron fist 30 years ago, came the day after he was re-elected to a sixth term, winning 79.32 percent of the vote in the April 11 presidential vote, the Electoral Commission announced, Monday.
