Chinese hackers infiltrate dozens of US government agencies

A private cybersecurity company that works with the US federal government revealed that sophisticated Chinese hackers have penetrated dozens of government agencies, financial institutions and other vital sectors in America, according to the Washington Post.

FireEye said the breaches continue. She noted that the investigation is in its early stages, but has already uncovered evidence that hackers have violated sensitive defense companies.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said it was not known if the Defense Department was compromised in the current campaign or not.

Charles Carmacall, the company’s chief technology officer, said that the Chinese hacking process was “so advanced” and sophisticated that it was difficult to discover. He explained that the campaign was targeting institutions that possess information valuable to the Chinese government.

“It sounds like classic espionage,” said Carmakal. There was theft of intellectual property and project data. We suspect data theft that we will never know about. ”

He pointed out that his company also discovered a second group involved in the piracy operation, but was unable to know whether that group was based in China or had links with the government.

For its part, the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency admitted on Tuesday that it was aware of “the continuous exploitation” of some flaws in the computers of some government agencies, critical infrastructure entities, and private sector institutions.

“FireEye” company stated that the hackers took advantage of some flaws in “Pulse Secure”, which enables employees to work remotely.

Ivanti T., the company that owns the program, said a limited number of customers were affected. She added that the team worked quickly to mitigate the damage.
