Reuters quoted Al-Jadeed TV, a Lebanese media outlet, that the US embassy in Beirut denied the validity of reports that the United States was considering imposing sanctions on the governor of the Lebanese Central Bank.On Thursday, Bloomberg agency quoted 4 well-informed officials as saying that the United States was considering imposing sanctions on Riad Salameh, governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, against the background of suspicions of embezzlement of public funds.

The agency quoted 4 informed officials, whose identities were not revealed, that officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden “discussed the possibility of taking concerted measures with their European counterparts against Salameh, who has headed the bank for 28 years.”

The sources reported that the discussion has focused so far on the possibility of “freezing Salameh’s assets abroad and enacting measures that would limit his ability to do business outside Lebanon,” adding that deliberations are ongoing and the final decision on taking action may not be imminent.
