The Presidency of the Republic reveals what happened between President Aoun and the Governor of the Central Bank


The General Directorate of the Presidency of the Republic issued a statement read by the political and media advisor to the President of the Republic Antoine Constantine regarding President Michel Aoun’s position on the financial situation and protest movements and his meeting with the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh.
The statement said that the President of the Republic “followed with great interest the protest movements witnessed in some Lebanese regions since yesterday evening, against the backdrop of the arrival of the US dollar exchange rate to the ceiling of ten thousand pounds. In this context, President Aoun called on the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh, during He received him this morning in Baabda Palace, knowing the reasons that led to the rise of the dollar to these levels, especially in the past few days, and informing the Lebanese, in order to ensure transparency, of the results of the investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Commission. In order for those involved to be prosecuted, in case it is proven that there are illegal speculative operations on the national currency, by individuals, institutions or banks.
The statement added that the President of the Republic asked the Governor of the Banque du Liban about the implementation of Circular No. 154 issued by him to the banks. He stressed the need to recover part of the funds previously transferred abroad by major shareholders and senior managers of banks, politicians and workers in the public sector, and to know what is the real size of the funds that were recovered in this context.
The President of the Republic also asked the Governor of the Banque du Liban about the course of the criminal audit, after “Alvarez and Morsal” company informed the Ministry of Finance that it did not obtain definitive answers through it to the questions it had previously posed to the Banque du Liban, as a precondition for enabling it to carry out its duties. And he stressed the necessity of conducting this audit, after the disappearance of all the reasons and allegations that led to his retirement.
According to the statement, President Aoun stressed that “the main concern remains the recovery of depositors’ money and the rights of people that cannot be wasted, neither through illegal speculation nor through suspicious transfers abroad.”
And the President of the Republic considered that “these practices led to the loss of a large part of deposits, which caused financial and social distress. People cried out loudly with it, so it went to the street and this is a legitimate matter, because a person cannot and is not permitted to remain silent about his right and watch his money be stolen Impoverishing it without a reaction. “
Aoun also stressed that “the right to demonstrate is sacred, and among the duties of the security forces is to protect demonstrators and public and private property, and to guarantee the right of people’s movement, which are rights enshrined in the constitution.”
