The mother thought her daughter was “dressed by a demon”

Sri Lankan police have arrested two people in connection with the death of a 9-year-old girl, who was repeatedly beaten, during a sorcery ritual believed to drive out an evil spirit.

The two suspects – the exorcist woman and the girl’s mother – were to appear in court on Monday to hear charges over the girl’s death, which took place over the weekend in Delgoda, a small town about 40 kilometers northeast of the capital, Colombo.

According to police spokesperson Ajith Rohana, the mother believed her daughter was wearing a demon, and took her to an exorcist’s house so that rituals could be performed to drive the soul away.

Rohana said that the exorcist first put the oil on the girl and then began to hit her repeatedly with a stick. When the girl lost consciousness, she was taken to the hospital where she died, according to the Associated Press.

Rohana pointed out that the woman who performed these rituals to the girl had been known in the region to provide such services in recent months, and the police were investigating whether anyone else had been abused or not.
