Prince Harry, in his television interview with the American anchor Oprah Winfrey, touched on the similarities between the press’s treatment of his late mother Princess Diana and his wife Megan, in the promotional clip that precedes the broadcast of the private interview that the couple had with the famous presenter.
In the 30-second CBS trailer, Harry says he fears history will “repeat itself,” before Harry and Meghan decide to give up their duties as two of the royals.
The clip includes a question that Winfrey directed to Megan about whether there was a “breakdown point” and whether she had “been silent or silent,” but the Duchess did not speak during the promotional clip.
The interview is scheduled to air on March 7th.
It is unclear when the interview with Meghan and Harry will be broadcast in the UK, but CBS will broadcast it in the US at prime time on that day.
In the full interview with CBS, Megan will talk about marriage, motherhood, life as a member of the royal family, and how she was coping with public pressure.
Prince Harry said earlier that he decided to waive his royal duties with the aim of protecting himself and his family from the “toxic” environment created by the UK press.
Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, Princess of Wales, relinquished the title of Her Royal Highness upon her divorce from Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, in August 1996.
Diana died a year later in a traffic accident in Paris. The driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and photographers on motorcycles were tracking the car when the accident occurred.
The trailer for the interview includes a photo of Prince Harry with his mother, Diana, when he was young.
Prince Harry said: “I can’t imagine how it was like while she was going through this experience alone during these years, because it was incredibly difficult for all of us.”
Harry also told Winfrey: “My biggest worry is that history will repeat itself.”
He added, “For me, I really feel as if a pregnancy has been removed from my shoulders. I also feel happy to be sitting here, and I am talking to you with my wife next to me.”
Winfrey is a personal friend of Meghan and attended Harry and Meghan’s 2018 wedding.
Harry and Meghan talked in the interview about their move to the United States last year and their future plans, according to CBS.
Speaking with James Cordon last week, Harry said he and his wife were determined to “temporarily retreat, not step down, as they are both senior members of the royal family.”
He added that the situation “is destroying my mental health”, referring to the pressures of the British press, adding that “what he did is what any father would do.”
It was announced last month that the Duke and Duchess would not return to the UK as working members of the royal family.
The couple said at the time that “public service is a public matter” and offered to continue supporting the organizations they represented.
Honorary military posts will be transferred to Harry, and the couple’s sponsorship of some charitable activities will be transferred to serving members of the royal family.
The announcement came a few days after the couple revealed that they were expecting their second child.
It was not clear if Harry and Meghan had told the royal family of their plans for this interview.
