Diaz was injured during the 1/1 draw of Real Madrid with its guest Real Sociedad on Monday, in the last stage of the competition, to be replaced during the meeting.
Real clarified that Diaz, who has played 15 games so far this season, has suffered a pelvic injury.
A statement published by Real on its official website today said: “After the tests that our player Mariano Diaz underwent, by the medical department at Real Madrid, he was diagnosed with a pelvic injury. His recovery process will be followed up in the coming period.”
Real did not specify a time frame for the absence of Diaz / 27 years, but it is expected that he will be absent for two or three weeks.
In addition to the confrontation with Argentine coach Diego Simeone’s team, Mariano Diaz is also likely to miss the royal team’s match with home to Elche on March 13th.
It is also not expected that Diaz will join Real’s meeting with its Italian guest, Atalanta, in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, on the 20th of this month.
Diaz’s injury comes to double the suffering of Frenchman Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid coach, before facing the leaders of the Spanish League, who are five points ahead of the white team, the third-placed team, and still has a postponed match as well.
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is racing to catch up with Atlético, after an injury caused him to be absent from the team in its last three matches.
Benzema, 33, is considered Real’s top scorer this season, having scored on 17 occasions in 28 matches he played across all competitions.
In the event that Benzema is unable to catch up with Atletico, Zidane is expected to use the 21-year-old rising player Hugo Duro to lead the Real Madrid attack in the match.
Duru participated in only three matches with Real, after he was promoted to the first team, coming from the club’s youth team.
The list of Real Madrid’s absences includes veteran defender Sergio Ramos, captain of the team, and Belgian Eden Hazard, Eder Militao and Danny Carvajal, while Brazilian full-back Marcelo may be fit to start the match, after recovering from a recent muscle injury, as he sat on the bench during the Sociedad meeting .
Real had achieved five wins against a single draw in its last six matches in all competitions before the derby.
