The movie “Daddy” was recently nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and is now showing in CCG theaters, and it completely dispels that idea. The film, written and directed by Florian Zeller, is a heart-wrenching masterpiece that was actually directed by some of the happiest artists who have ever graced the screen.
Olivia Coleman, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress versus Best Actor nominee Anthony Hopkins, is impatient with the idea that she can’t film every group she walks on, from “Broadchurch” to “The Crown” to “The Favorite” – it’s all for the sake of that. Hopkins, who has just become the oldest man to ever be nominated for Best Actor, at the age of 83, has entered a new phase of his career in recent years, becoming a superstar on social media. The image of the terrifying serial killer Hannibal Lecter, his most famous role, has been replaced by an elderly painter who posts videos of himself hugging his cat Niblo and dancing for his 2.7 million followers on Instagram.
On the set, Hopkins and Coleman shared an instant connection, with Hopkins still reacting at the loudest to Coleman’s many jokes when the cameras weren’t spinning.

Long before Coleman and Hopkins participated, “The Father” began as a critically acclaimed French play in 2012 written by Zeller of Paris, which caught the world’s attention upon its debut in the Ustinov theater studio. Royal in Bath, England in 2014, before moving to London’s West End. In 2016, the play was shown on Broadway starring Frank Angela in the title role, for which it won a Tony Award. The work was voted one of the best plays of the past decade.
The story revolves around a man suffering from the effects of dementia and a girl who finds it increasingly difficult to take care of him while living her own life. The movie begins with a grimly funny way before quickly turning into a horrific one, drawing the viewer into the perspective of the titular father and making his fear, confusion, and temporal separation frighteningly true.
While it was being translated into a movie, Zeller changed the main character’s name from André to Anthony. The change was not an accident – Hopkins was his first choice for the role. He fulfilled his wish, and with Oscar winner Coleman surrounding him as a girl, he made his dream come true.
“It was the most intense and enjoyable experience. And I’m so grateful that it happened with the most talented person. I think it was the happiest experience in my entire life, in fact, ”Zeller says.
Zeller was a director for his debut in “The Father,” although Coleman says you’ll never know, because Zeller knew exactly what he wanted at all times, directing the feature with focus and attention.
It’s just a mixture of an instinct and a desire to tell a story. We felt we had to just say it and try it. We never know. It is a journey of many doubts. “The condemnation should be higher than suspicion,” says Zeller.
