One of the fastest asteroids that will pass near our planet … 100 times less than sound

The President of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majed Abu Zahra, said: On Sunday March 21, 2021, the Earth will witness the approach of the large asteroid 2001 FO32; But it does not pose a threat and is not on the collision course with our planet, either now or for centuries to come; But it is a very important opportunity to know its size and brightness better, and to get a better idea of the composition of this space rock.

Abu Zahra pointed out that the asteroid 2001 FO32 has a diameter of about one kilometer (according to estimates), and it belongs to the Apollo asteroids, a group of space rocks whose orbits intersect with Earth’s orbit and is the most numerous group of near-Earth objects with more than 10,000 asteroids. registered.

He added: Although asteroid 2001 FO32 is very small compared to large asteroids such as Vesta, which has a diameter of 525 kilometers; However, it is still larger than 97% of all known asteroids, in addition to being one of the fastest asteroids that will ever pass near our planet; It is moving at about 34.4 kilometers per second; Which means it is 100 times faster than the speed of sound.

He continued: In general, this asteroid is much smaller than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs. But if he’s on a collision course, It could cause a huge fireball and shock wave over an area hundreds of kilometers wide, with falling debris over a vast area, and it would scatter dust that would affect the atmosphere, weather and climate for years, and if it landed in the sea to cause a huge tsunami; But there is no danger from this asteroid.

Abu Zahra confirmed that the asteroid 2001 FO32 was first discovered in 2001, and it takes 2.2 years to orbit around the sun, and its approach this year will be the closest over the next 200 years. Where it will reach a distance of 1.944.772.3 kilometers at 10:03 pm KSA (16:03 GMT), and its brightness will be (+11.7); Which means that it will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye; But it can be easily observed through a telescope 8 inches or larger, and because the asteroid is moving at extraordinary speed; Its movement across the sky can be detected in real time.

The asteroid 2001 FO32 was classified as a “potential danger” because its size is relatively large, and it has a close orbital intersection distance with the Earth of less than 7,479,893 kilometers. This classification means that the asteroid could cause great damage in the event of collision. Nevertheless, the asteroid 2001 FO32 would not pose any threat. Its path is well calculated, and it is known exactly how far it will travel from the ground.

He continued: To find out the correct location of the asteroid in the night sky, one can take advantage of a free application such as (Stellarium) and use it to properly direct the electronic telescope, and seize the opportunity to observe the largest and fastest known asteroid in 2021.
