The Syrian journalist and novelist, Khalil Sweileh, said: “To translate your novel into another language, this means that it flew with two wings outside the land of your mother tongue. Euphoria leads you to questions of the type: How does the other receive the pain of another language in his own language, to what extent will the destinies of characters who live with different concerns attract him, and what degree of influence of a foreign reader is with the climates that have created them, without thinking that they will travel great distances to be part of a second culture. Of course, I should thank the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for allowing my novel (The Test of Regret) to breathe additional oxygen outside the space of the Arabic language.
It is noteworthy that the Sheikh Zayed Book Award launched a translation grant in 2018 to enhance the presence of Arabic literature at the global level, and to support Arab writers to enable them to publish their award-winning works in other languages, and the grant provides financial funding of up to 19 thousand dollars to international publishing houses, which work to publish books in languages The works that were translated with the support of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award include: the novel “The Dinoraf” by Emirati writer Hessa Al Muhairi, which has been translated into English, French and Italian, and “Crazy Bethlehem” by the Palestinian writer Osama Al Eisa, which was translated into Ukrainian and French, and a story “I dream of being a cement mixer” by Kuwaiti writer Hussein Al-Mutawa, which has been translated into English, French and German, and the story “Without a Hat” by Kuwaiti writer Latifa Butti, which has been translated into French.
