French club Olympique de Marseille announced, on Friday, that it has signed a contract with Argentine Jorge Sampaoli as the new coach of the team, succeeding André Villach Boach, while the Spanish sports director, Pablo Longoria, became the new president of the club.

In a statement issued by the club’s owner, American Frank McCourt, he said that “there are profound changes that open a new chapter” for the club, mired in deep crisis, indicating that he will arrive in the city this week.

Longoria will assume the presidency of the club immediately, succeeding Jacques Henry Aero, who faced severe criticism from a large section of the fans, and who will be a member of the oversight board.

The Spaniard, who has served as sporting director since 3 August, will be responsible for managing the sporting and economic sides of Marseille.

Longoria said that his appointment is a great honor for him, stressing his desire to “contribute to developing a style of play that matches the passion of our fans.”

In turn, Sampaoli signed a contract until June 2023, and Marseille said that the contract with him came because of his quality, his experience as a coach “at the highest level”, and his preference for offensive play.

Sampaoli led the Argentine national team as well as Chile, and also led Seville in Spain and Santos and Atletico Mineiro in Brazil.
