Saudi Arabia announced yesterday that its plans to complete the second and final phase of the milling sector privatization program in the country will continue, at a time when it confirmed the priority of food security and preparedness for the next phase through the plan to receive the wheat commodity and determine the purchase price per ton, according to the results of the Board of Directors of the General Grain Corporation yesterday headed by a minister Environment, Water and Agriculture, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, Engineer Abdul Rahman Al-Fadhli.
During the meeting, the institution’s role in the food security system in light of the new Corona pandemic was discussed, at a time when the developments of the second phase of the flour milling sector allocation program were discussed, and the institution’s plan to receive local wheat from farmers for the current agricultural season according to the specified quantities, and to look at what it had reached. The works in the project to establish storage silos in the commercial port of Yanbu.
Engineer Al-Fadhli pointed out that the food security system in the Kingdom has succeeded in absorbing the shocks left by the Corona pandemic, as the local markets have not witnessed a scarcity or shortage of any food commodity, stressing the concerted efforts of all parties concerned with the food security system in the Kingdom, despite the great challenges that faced Global supply chains in light of the spread of the (Covid-19) virus in many of the world’s major food-exporting countries.
Al-Fadhli indicated that the steps taken over the past two years following the adoption of the food security strategy and the launch of the Food Security Committee and its secretariat with the participation of representatives of 22 governmental and private entities concerned with the food security system helped unify efforts to maintain the continuity of food supply chains in light of the pandemic, and to conduct early monitoring of levels The abundance and stocks of food commodities in the market through the formation of a committee for the abundance of food commodities, from which a team emerged to monitor the levels of strategic storage and the stability of supplies of commodities essential to the food security of the Kingdom, working through the Executive Office of Food Security Strategy at the General Organization for Grains.
Al-Fadhli explained that work is underway to complete the second and final phase of the milling sector privatization program, as the procedures for that phase were discussed and work progressed, especially after the success of the first phase of the program and the investors formally took over the management of the first and third companies, starting from the current fiscal year.
Al-Fadhli stated that the council approved the approval of the price of buying wheat from farmers for the current agricultural season at the amount of 1,375 riyals ($ 366) per ton. He thanked the Saudi leadership for issuing the approval of the Council of Ministers for the General Organization for Grains to buy wheat from farmers if they choose to grow wheat instead of green fodder. For a period of five years, not exceeding 1.5 million tons per year, at prices determined by the Corporation, guided by the prevailing international prices.
