The US authorities have officially approved the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine against the Coronavirus.
This is the third vaccine that the US Food and Drug Administration has authorized for use in combating Covid-19.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is also less expensive than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, and it can be stored in regular refrigerators instead of freezers.
The trials showed the effectiveness of the new vaccine by more than 85 percent in severe cases, and by 66 percent in total, after including moderate cases.
The United States is the first country to adopt the vaccine produced by the Belgian company Janssen, which agreed to provide the United States with 100 million doses by the end of June.
The United Kingdom, the European Union and Canada have all requested doses of the vaccine. The Kovacs initiative also requested 500 million doses to be distributed to poor countries.
The American president praised what he described as “an encouraging development and good news for all Americans,” but at the same time he warned that “the battle is not over yet.”
Biden said: “As we celebrate this news, I say to all Americans, be sure to wash your hands, maintain social distancing, and continue to wear masks.”
And the US President added: “As I have said repeatedly, things may get worse again with the outbreak of new strains.”
The US Food and Drug Administration’s decision to license the Johnson & Johnson vaccine came after an external panel of experts unanimously agreed on Friday on the vaccine.
In experiments on the effectiveness of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine conducted in the United States, South Africa and Brazil, there were no deaths among the samples of participants who received the dose, and none of them returned to the hospital for 28 days after receiving the dose.
Because the single-dose vaccine is unlike Pfizer and Moderna, the new vaccine consequently requires less time and fewer medical staff.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a normal influenza virus that has been treated so that it is harmless, before it is safely loaded with the genetic code of the Corona virus and injected into the body.
The injection of this regular virus loaded with the genetic characteristics of the epidemic is sufficient for the body to recognize the danger and learn how to fight the Corona virus, as well as training the immune system to resist the virus when it is actually infected.
This method of developing the virus is similar to the way that the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca developed their own vaccine.
What is the situation in the United States of America?
About 72.8 million Americans have already been vaccinated, and authorities distribute about 1.3 million doses nationwide every day.
Biden had pledged to distribute one hundred million doses of Corona vaccines on the first day of his inauguration as president.
Corona has killed more than 508,000 in the United States of America. In recent weeks, there has been a decline in the number of new infections and deaths.
Health experts warn that the mutation of the virus continues to threaten the progress made in confronting it.
