It’s no secret that Apple is working hard on augmented reality and virtual devices, with report From Bloomberg in January claims the company is working on extremely expensive sunglasses that could hit stores in 2022.
The Information report backs up many details from the Bloomberg report, including the textile materials the company is said to use to reduce the weight of the device, and the high price tag.
The new report claims the price could be close to $ 3,000, which is significantly higher than most other independent mixed reality glasses, such as the Oculus Quest 2 at $ 299.
The alleged design also appears to borrow cues from a variety of other Apple devices, including the Apple Watch-style interchangeable bands and the HomePod mesh.
There are also new details about the actual hardware of the rumored device, which is said to offer virtual and mixed reality applications, thanks to more than a dozen cameras to track hand movement and LIDAR sensors for mapping rooms, similar to the augmented reality effects across the iPad Pro and iPhone 12 Pro.
The glasses are also said to feature dual 8K displays with eye tracking technology that can provide a resolution far superior to any current commercial VR glasses on the market today.
It is worth noting that the report claims that Apple will not operate 8K screens with full accuracy all the time. Instead, the device uses eye tracking technology to determine where users are looking, and then displays peripheral areas with less accuracy to improve performance.
The chips are expected, as Bloomberg previously reported, from internally developed Apple Silicon, which could be more powerful than Apple’s current M1 chip.
Apple is said to be trying a variety of control methods, including hand tracking, eye tracking, and the disc installed on the side of the glasses, although nothing has been finalized yet.
The glasses, often described as a virtual reality device with limited AR functionality, are intended to be a major step toward Apple’s ultimate goal of a lightweight augmented reality device indistinguishable from standard eyeglasses.
