“Abu Zahra”: It is classified among the potentially dangerous asteroids because of its size .. It is not visible with the eye

The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Magda Abu Zahra, said: Observers are preparing to observe the approach of the asteroid 2001 FO32 from the globe on March 21 at 07:03 pm KSA (04:03 pm GMT), where it will be at a distance of 2,016,351 km, which is The largest known asteroid will pass near our planet this year 2021.

He added: The asteroid was discovered on March 23, 2001 by the Lincoln Center for Near-Earth Asteroid Research (Liner) near Socorro, New Mexico, as it moves in an elliptical orbit that makes it complete one revolution around the sun every 810 days, so that it is at the closest distance to the sun 44,879 .361 km, and at the furthest distance from the Sun, 465,249,378 km.

He continued: This asteroid has been classified among the potentially dangerous asteroids due to its size and sometimes passing near the Earth, but it must be emphasized that it does not pose any risk of collision with our planet.

And he continued: This asteroid is considered very important, as it is one of the fastest known space rocks, moving at a speed of 34.4 kilometers per second, compared to the Earth orbiting the sun at a speed of about 30 kilometers per second, so its movement can be detected in front of the stars – in real time, as it will look like a point Photocell slow moving.

And Abizaid: It is estimated that the diameter of the asteroid ranges between (0.8 km to 1.6 km) depending on its brightness and the way it reflects sunlight, which makes it larger than 97% of asteroids, but it is small compared to the large asteroids.

He said: The asteroid will be too faint when approaching it so that it cannot be seen with the naked eye, but it will be visible through telescopes measuring 8 inches or larger when the telescope is directed towards the correct location in the sky at the right time, and the application (Stellarium) can be used for more details about observation.

It is worth noting that after the asteroid passed near the Earth in next March, its next approach will take place after 31 years, on March 22, 2052, however, this year’s approach will be closest to Earth during the next 200 years.
