The Russian parliament approved the extension of the new treaty of strategic weapons, “New Start”, for five years, after reaching a last-minute agreement with the United States.
“The agreement between Moscow and Washington has been extended for a period of five years, until February 5, 2026,” the House of Representatives said in a statement after the unanimous approval of the attending deputies during a public session broadcast by television.
The New START Treaty (the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) entered into force in 2011 and established a deal between the United States and Russia that would place controls on weapons stocks and allow for inspections.
The fate of the treaty was in doubt, but agreement to extend it culminated in a phone call yesterday between US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin.
