Oliver Bierhoff, Director of the German Football Association, expressed his hope for the return of harmony and tranquility with Mesut Ozil, the star of the German national team who won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
In statements published in the German newspaper Bild, Bierhoff said: “We learned that the president of the German Football Association contacted Massoud. We will be happy if the meeting takes place and everyone returns to sit around the table.” He added, “I already contacted Massoud through the application (WhatsApp) to congratulate him on his birthday, and his response was very nice.”
Ozil retired from international football amid accusations of racism, after the humiliating departure of the team from the journey to defend its world title, as it failed to pass the group stage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Before the start of the 2018 World Cup, some controversial photos were taken of the player Ozil, accompanied by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Ozil said he had received a “nice personal message” from Fritz Keeler, president of the German Football Association.
The player emphasized that he did not regret playing for Germany, recalling the “amazing memories” of him and the team in the 2014 World Cup, which the team won its title.
For his part, Manuel Neuer, the goalkeeper and captain of the German national football team, expressed that he still trusted his team’s chances to compete strongly during the next European Nations Cup, despite the heavy 6-0 defeat the team suffered against its Spanish host at the end of its 2020 matches.
Neuer confirmed that he trusts the team’s ability to present everything it has in Euro 2020, which has been postponed for the current year due to the outbreak of the new Corona virus.
The heavy defeat against Spain caused an increase in the intensity of protests and criticism against Joachim Loew, the German coach.
“I am sure we will give everything,” said Neuer, who won the title of the best goalkeeper in the world in the FIFA poll for 2020.
“I am a positive person,” Neuer said in an interview published on the website of the German Game Federation. I trust our team. I think that we have a chance to play a good role in the European Championship. ”
The last match of the “Manshafts” witnessed a severe defeat for the team against its Spanish counterpart at the end of the team’s matches in its group in the first round of the European Nations League in November. The defeat sparked controversy over coach Joachim Loew’s future with the «Manshafts», but the German Football Association confirmed after that Loew would continue to lead the team, and that he would be coach of the team in Euro 2020.
Neuer said: «We realize how important the mental aspect of the team is in such tournaments, as well as the importance of cohesion between the working group in the team. My mission and the task of every captain in any team is to face any negative developments in the team. ”
He explained: “The European title is a big goal and a supreme goal for the team. We are all responsible for giving our best and best performance in this tournament this summer. ”
The “Manshafts” will start their international matches in 2021 against the teams of Iceland, Romania and North Macedonia, starting from next March 25th.
Neuer said, “We have to take these matches seriously, but they should be prepared for us before we go to the Euro 2020 events. We have few other opportunities to prepare in light of the integrated international agenda.”
On the other hand, the German Athletes Alliance (Athletes Deutschland) hopes to impose a heavy penalty in the doping case involving Dr. Mark S and four other partners.
“Athletes have repeatedly called for tough action against those behind the doping and those who benefit from it,” said Johannes Herber, director general of the alliance two days before the verdict was issued by a Munich court.
“A strict punishment against the accused in this trial will be a very important message,” Herber added.
Convictions are expected against the five accused the day after tomorrow (Friday), as Mark S will be threatened with imprisonment as agitator and organizer. The Public Prosecution demanded a prison sentence of five and a half years, while the defense requested a prison sentence of only three years, which will lead to the doctor’s release soon.
The doctor had admitted in a written statement read by his lawyers that he was involved in illegal practices after being accused of violating drug and stimulant laws in nearly 150 cases, and the charges also included one of causing serious injury.
According to the indictment, the doctor administered steroids to the athletes between 2011 and 2019. Including competitors at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in South Korea, several world championships and the Tour de France International.
It is reported that Mark S was arrested in February 2019, after raids on his home in Erfurt, Germany, during the World Ski Championships in the Austrian city of Seefeld.
Alphonse Hürmann, president of the German Olympic Sports Federation, said: “For months we have been eagerly looking to Munich, where the trial of Dr. Mark S offers an insight into the depths of sport.”
