French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that his country will contribute to a financing fund that will be established to help Lebanon, but it will not replace some countries’ obligations towards the country.
Macron added, during his speech at the opening of the Lebanon Support Conference, that France will spare no effort to help Lebanon, but it is necessary to complete investigations into the circumstances and consequences of the Beirut port explosion, and to implement fundamental reforms.
The French President made it clear that Lebanon is plunging further into its crisis and the duty requires us to help it and respond to its real needs, and Macron confirmed that he will return to Lebanon in December to put pressure on the political class.
Macron called on Lebanese politicians to quickly form a new government to implement reforms, otherwise Lebanon will not receive international aid.
For his part, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said that the French initiative must succeed despite the obstacles it faces, because the crises Lebanon is going through have reached their maximum limit.
Aoun added, “We are determined to continue the process of liberating the Lebanese state from the system of political, economic and administrative corruption that has become its hostage.”
And the Lebanese President continued, saying: “Our priority today is to form a government by adopting single standards that apply to all political forces.”
Aoun explained that Lebanon is still suffering due to the massive displacement of Syrians to it, and it is necessary for the international community to resolve the issue of their return to their lands.
On the other hand, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, said during his speech at the Lebanon Support Conference, “We must call on the leadership in Lebanon to put aside political differences and interests and meet the needs of citizens.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations added, “We will continue to support Lebanon and its people in the long march to restore health and stability.”
Guterres stressed the importance of meeting the needs of the Lebanese people and reconstruction, with the support of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other organizations and countries.
