The Spanish coach, Josep Guardiola, renewed his contract with Manchester City for an additional two years, to end in June 2023, the northern club announced Thursday.

City said in a statement that “since joining Manchester City, Pep has changed the club’s playing style and led his team to eight important titles, setting several records during this period.”

As for Guardiola, he said, “Since my arrival in Manchester City, I have felt that I am a welcome person from the club and the city itself, the players, employees, supporters of the club, the people of Manchester, the president and the owner of the club.”

“Since my appointment, we have achieved a lot together. We scored goals, won matches and won titles, and we are all proud of these successes,” he added.

He explained, “Getting this kind of support is the best thing any coach can have. I have everything to do my job and I am honored by the trust that the owner, the president, Ferrand (Soriano) and Texi (Begirishtin) has placed in me to continue for another two years,” noting that “The challenge for us is to continue the process of development and progress and I am very excited to help Manchester City do that.”

The president of the Emirati club, Khaldoun Al Mubarak, hailed the step of renewing the contract with Guardiola, saying, “It is a testament to the qualities and passion of Pep Guardiola and his smart approach, which has become part of the fabric of football we play and our culture as a club.”

“This influence was central to great successes during his tenure as coach of the club, which is why we are happy because he shares the same vision and because we are confident in our ability, together, to achieve more successes on and off the pitch,” he added.

“It was natural to renew Pep’s contract with regard to the journey we have traveled in the last decade, and he contributed greatly to it. It is the result of trust and mutual respect between him and the club.”

Guardiola’s contract, who took over as Manchester City coach in 2016, was to expire in June 2021.

“I am incredibly happy here. I am happy to be in Manchester and I hope to be able to do a good job this season to stay longer,” Pep said recently, when his name was mentioned to coach Barcelona in the event that Victor Font wins the presidency of the Catalan club.

Although Guardiola won two Premier League titles since joining City from German giants Bayern Munich in 2016, he has achieved nothing on the continental level.

City won 181 of the 245 games it fought under Guardiola’s supervision in various competitions on its way to winning the 2017-2018 Premier League season with 100 points, before retaining its title in 2019, but it was 18 points behind champion Liverpool last season.

With Guardiola continuing with City, the club’s shares rise in obtaining the services of Argentine star Lionel Messi, whose contract with Barcelona expires last June, knowing that a strong friendship has been between them since the days of Guardiola’s supervision of the Catalan team’s training.
