The Vatican issued an official statement mourning Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona, who died on Wednesday at the age of 60.

The Vatican said that Pope Francis remembers Maradona with love and prays for him, while the official Vatican news site published the story of the death of the Argentine legend on its home page entitled “The Poet of Football”.

Maradona had met the Pope several times in the Vatican after the election of Francis in 2013, as the first pope from the South American continent.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said: “The Pope was informed of the death of Diego Maradona, and he remembers the times he met him in past years with love, and reminds him in his prayers as he did in the past days when he learned of his condition.”

It is noteworthy that Pope Francis, an Argentine, is a fan of the San Lorenzo team in the capital, “Buenos Aires”.

It is worth noting that Maradona passed away after his health deteriorated in his home, knowing that he underwent a brain surgery a few weeks ago, but left the hospital in recent days and settled in his home, which witnessed his last breath.

Maradona is considered one of the most important players in the history of Argentina, as he led the country’s national team to the second and last World Cup, the 1986 edition.
