The Holy See media described him as “the poet of football.”
Maradona, who died on Wednesday at his home in Argentina after a heart attack, met the Pope several times in the Vatican after Francis was elected in 2013 as the first Latin American Pope.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said: “The Pope was informed of the death of Diego Maradona, and he remembers the times he met him in past years with love, and reminds him in his prayers as he did in the past days when he learned of his condition.”
Francis is a fan of the San Lorenzo soccer team in Buenos Aires.
The official Vatican news site published the story of Maradona’s death on its home page entitled “The Poet of Football”.
