Marie Antoinette’s silk shoes were auctioned at the Palace of Versailles

The silk shoes of Marie Antoinette, the last queen of France who was executed during the French Revolution, were put up for auction on Sunday, starting at 10,000 euros ($ 11,800).The sale will take place at the Palace of Versailles, where angry mobs surrounded the Queen and King Louis XVI, before they were executed by guillotine in 1793.

The shoe has its name on its heel, and Jean-Pierre Ozina of the auction house conducting the sale said he believed it was worn regularly during everyday life in the palace.

“This auction comes at a time when the French are facing real doubts about their values, and many of them are clinging to the history of France,” said Ouzina. “Marie Antoinette is a person of interest to the whole world.”
