Fierce competition between novelists from Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt for the Sheikh Zayed Prize


Abu Dhabi – The Sheikh Zayed Book Award announced the long list of the Literature Branch in its fifteenth session, and the list included 12 works from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Sudan and Iraq.

The list includes 9 fictional works, which are the novel “To Love Life” by Alawiya Sobh from Lebanon, issued by Dar Al Adab for Publishing and Distribution in 2020, and “Faces of the Hosh” by novelist Hussein Ali Hussein from Saudi Arabia, issued by the Cultural Center for Book in 2020, and The Travelers Room ”by novelist Izzat Al-Qamhawi from Egypt, published by the Egyptian Lebanese House in 2020, and the novel“ The Princess and the Ring ”by Rashid Al-Daif from Lebanon, published by Dar Al-Saqi in 2020.

The list also includes the novel “Fi Athar Inayat Al-Zayat” by the Egyptian novelist Iman Mersal, published by Khan Library in 2019, and “Safar Barlik” by Maqbool Al-Alawi from Saudi Arabia, published by Dar Al-Saqi in 2019.

The novel “Their Hanging Gardens” by Kuwaiti novelist Najma Idris, published by Dar Al-Adab for Publishing and Distribution in 2019, participates in the competition for the award, as well as “Doctor Aryaf” by Egyptian novelist Muhammad Al-Mansi Qandil, published by Dar Al-Shorouk for Publishing and Distribution in 2020, and “The Torah of Al-Mutanabi” by writer Naim Abd Muhalhal from Iraq, issued by the Nineveh House for Studies, Publishing and Distribution in 2019.

3 poetry collections competed to win the Sheikh Zayed Prize, which is “What I Am In” by the Egyptian poet Ahmed Al-Shahawi, issued by the Egyptian Lebanese House in 2020, and “Maqam Forgetting” by the Saudi poet Mohammed Ibrahim Yaqoub, issued by the Arab Expansion Foundation in 2019, and the diwan “As Hama Matar Speech by the Sudanese poet Rawda Al-Hajj, issued by Dar Al-Misk for Publishing and Distribution in 2020.

After announcing the long lists of the various branches of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, the jury committees will begin to evaluate the books included in the long lists and submit their reports to the scientific committee, which in turn will choose the works nominated to enter the short lists for the Board of Trustees to approve them and select the winners.

It is noteworthy that the Arts branch attracted 584 jobs in this year’s session, an increase representing 33 percent in the number of nominations compared to the last session.

The 15th session of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award as a whole witnessed a remarkable turnout in the number of nominations, as it registered 2,349 nominations this year, an increase of 23 percent compared to the number of nominations during the last session, which reached 1900.

The highest Arab participations were led by Egypt, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Jordan, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia and Lebanon, while the highest posts from other languages ​​topped the United Kingdom, followed by the United States of America, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Canada and the Netherlands.

In its fifteenth session, the award received nominations from 12 countries participating for the first time, namely Armenia, Eritrea, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Niger, Greece, Indonesia, Burkina Faso, South Africa, Belarus, Singapore, Switzerland and Finland.
