Sharjah, November 23, / WAM / The Sharjah Art Foundation announced that Emirati director and writer Abdullah Al Kaabi has won the “Participatory Forum” prize of 200,000 dirhams for the screenplay for his film “Camel Tears”, presented by the Foundation and Sharjah Media City / Shams / to convert the script into a fictional film Provided that the production of the film will start early next year and shoot it in various locations in the Emirate of Sharjah.
Sheikha Hoor bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Art Foundation, said: “The foundation has always sought, through its artistic and cultural programs, to support emerging talents regionally and internationally, which has been evident over the past years by offering more initiatives and projects related to cinema, contemporary art, publishing and music.”
She added, “We launched the first edition of the participatory forum last year with the aim of stimulating filmmaking practices in the United Arab Emirates, so that the forum will return again this year on a large scale, as we have added a number of initiatives that will contribute to supporting local film production.”
Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi explained that the film professional project is another step we take towards empowering these emerging talents with the tools and skills that will help them provide a professional film industry that brings them to the world. The Participatory Forum initiative is one of the important initiatives presented by the Sharjah Film Platform with the aim of supporting emerging filmmakers by extending bridges of communication between them and those with expertise to exchange ideas and discuss their projects in a way that enriches their artistic practice.
The initiative offers a prize to support an Emirati writer in each session, whereby the prize money is allocated to convert the winning scenario into a feature film to be shot in the Emirate of Sharjah.
The Foundation decided to increase the value of the Participatory Forum award from 100 thousand to 200 thousand dirhams in response to the economic difficulties that artists and filmmakers face in light of the repercussions of the spread of the Corona epidemic in the world.
The list of finalists included 10 writers: Saeed Rashid Al Dhaheri, Muhammad Ahmad Al Hammadi, Youssef Ibrahim, Mira Al Hammadi, Abdullah Al Kaabi, Saleh Karameh, Abdullah Al Junaibi, Abdullah Al Hamiri, Mubarak Mashi and Abdul Basit Qaid who have undergone professional training on the Internet related to screenplay skills.
The participants presented their texts as part of presentations held on the twentieth of November at Al Mureijah Square of the Sharjah Art Foundation. The jury of the participatory forum, composed of filmmakers and prominent experts, discussed the texts presented and decided on the project of the film “Camel Tears” by Emirati director and writer Abdullah Al Kaabi.
The jury for the participatory forum consisted of Youssef Abu Bakr, head of the creative development department at Art Format Lab, Nawaf Al-Janahi, director and screenwriter, Manal Ali bin Amr, director and screenwriter, and Hana Al-Shatri, director and producer, and Fajr Qasim Ali, director of media development – Medina Sharjah Media / Sun /.
