London: Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti may have caused a headache for himself when choosing the starting goalkeeper after the Swedish Robin Olsen made his first appearance in the Premier League, playing in place of Jordan Pickford, despite the fact of the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.
The experienced Olsen joined from Roma on loan on 5 October, showed his potential and saved several chances in a match that ended with Everton’s second loss in a row.
And with Ancelotti saying before the match he had rested Beckford before facing Manchester United next week, he may have put pressure on the England international, who has made some costly mistakes this season.
“I wanted to give Robin the chance to be part of the group and the team,” Ancelotti told the BBC after the match. After that, Jordan will return. Robben will play again, but not against United. ”
“Robin has done great, he’s done his job, and he’s worth playing,” he added. Jordan will be back and we will have two great goalkeepers and that’s what we need. Robin will play again, I don’t know when, but in the next match Jordan will return. ”
Olsen, who has played 40 caps for Sweden, was not tested in the first half hour before shining and prevented Alain Saint-Maximin from scoring after a counterattack to Newcastle.
“I think Robin has performed admirably,” Everton defender Michael Kane told Sky Sports. He did everything asked of him and saved a dangerous attempt.
“It is great that there is such competition for centers because this helps bring out the best in people.”
Olsen, who remains his country’s main goalkeeper, may return to the bench, but any new mistakes from Pickford may make him play fast.
