Ziyad Al-Drees, founder of the (celebration of the International Day of the Arabic Language), the former representative of Saudi Arabia to UNESCO, thanked the Minister of Sports, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, after the latter announced the participation of the sports sector in the activation of the “Year of Arabic Calligraphy” initiative, by Arabizing the names on the players’ shirts Clubs of the Prince Muhammad Bin Salman Cup League for the next season, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.

This comes in light of the continuous support of His Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect him – for the wonderful decision.

Al-Drees said in a statement to “Previously”: We welcome and appreciate this decision, which bridges the relationship between youth sports and culture, and strengthens the building of their identity. The Arabic language is one of the most important elements in forming an identity for a person in general.

Al-Drees added: The presence of the Arabic language on the players’ shirts means that the message will reach the largest segment of sports practitioners, which are the youth group, who are at the same time the ones targeted in language-promoting activities. This decision also coincides with the year of Arabic calligraphy announced, adopted and supported by the Minister of Culture. It also comes early to celebrate the International Day of the Arabic Language this year 2020 on December 18th.

He added: Many thanks to the Ministry of Sports for this new initiative, and thanks to the Ministry of Culture for its successive initiatives, to the Ministry of Education, and to everyone who supports our language (the language of the Qur’an).
