The NASA Juno mission detected strange, ghost-like blue shapes orbiting in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, which they later discovered were fast flashes of light.
According to the US network, “CNN”, these fast flashes similar to lightning, which produce ghost-like shapes, also occur on the ground, in the upper atmosphere during large thunderstorms, but this is the first time that they have been observed on another planet. .
These flashes only last for fractions of a second.
“On planet Earth, these flashes are red due to their interaction with nitrogen in the upper atmosphere,” Rohini Giles, a researcher with the Juno mission team, said in a statement. But on Jupiter, the upper atmosphere is mostly hydrogen; Therefore, it may appear either in blue or pink. ”
“NASA” published an image showing these “ghosts”, noting that this phenomenon occurred 11 times during the past four years, and that it recently noticed it during image processing.
Juno has been orbiting Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, since 2016. With the aim of providing a more detailed picture of it.
These results were published Tuesday in the Journal of Geophysical Research.
