Mysterious bacteria and virus attack children’s brains!


A new study stated that a newly discovered bacterium may double the risk of a common virus to cause a serious health condition in the brain in infants, according to a report from the “Life Science” website.

The researchers analyzed blood and cerebrospinal fluid from 100 infants suffering from hydrocephalus in Uganda.

Hydrocephalus is a brain disorder that involves an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the cavities of the brain. Around 400,000 new cases of hydrocephalus are diagnosed worldwide every year.

And scientists did not know the nature of the bacteria that infects infants and causes them to hydrocephalus or brain.

The team found that 64 of them had the condition after infection (brain imaging showed signs of previous infection) and 36 of them had no previous infection.

Many samples contained “these strange bacteria”, which belong to a strain that was not known before, and is now called “Mbali” after the Ugandan city where CURE Hospital is located.

Researchers also found that some infants who had hydrocephalus were also infected with a common virus called CMV.

According to the report, this virus is spread all over the world, and although it usually causes slight symptoms in adults, it can cause more serious symptoms in infants, such as brain damage, seizures and failure to thrive.

The researchers said they are not yet sure how the virus and bacteria relate to each other.
