Protesters in Edo province, southern Nigeria, stormed a prison in the area and released dozens of prisoners.
An Edo provincial government official, Osarudion Uji, said today that the incident occurred after demonstrators protesting against police “excesses” broke through the walls of the Nigerian Correctional Center headquarters in Benin, a city in Edo.
Oji said that the state government imposed a 24-hour curfew throughout the province after the prison break-in, noting that “this decision became necessary due to the extremely disturbing incidents of sabotage and attacks on individuals and institutions by unidentified persons under the guise of anti-police protesters.”
