Al-Ahly of Egypt came very close to reaching the final of the African Champions League, with its deserved victory last night over its host, Wydad Casablanca, with two clean goals in the match that brought them together at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
Al-Ahly, who has been searching for a title absent from its coffers for 7 years, specifically since 2013, will host the Moroccan team after less than a week in Cairo, knowing that it has the record number of winning the title by 8 tournaments.
Tomorrow, at the same stadium, Egyptian club Zamalek will meet Raja Casablanca, in the first leg of the same round.
Al-Ahly gave hosts only 3 minutes to open the scoring after a disastrous mistake by Moroccan defender Yahya Jubran, who was exploited by striker Mohamed Magdi Afsha, who was alone with the goalkeeper and easily placed the ball to his left in the net.
In the 39th minute of the first half, the Moroccan club, Wydad Club, got a penalty kick after Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy blocked Wydad’s professional, Gbagbo Magi, by his player Badi Awok to atone for his mistake and responded to the kick in two installments, to end the game with Al-Ahly advancing with one goal.
Al-Ahly strengthened its progress with a second goal, achieved in the 61st minute, with a penalty kick obtained after touching the ball from a Wydad player inside the box, to be translated by Al-Ahly’s professional, Tunisian Ali Maaloul into the net.
