The number of Americans filing for new unemployment benefits unexpectedly increased last week, reinforcing views that the economic recovery from the Corona pandemic is losing momentum.
The US Labor Department said on Thursday that the total number of new applications for unemployment benefits, adjusted in light of seasonal factors, amounted to 870,000 for the week ending September 19, compared to 866,000 the previous week.
Economists had expected the number of applications to reach 840,000 in the most recent week.
Demand is above a peak of 665,000 reached during the Great Recession between 2007 and 2009.
Reuters reported that demand in the service sectors remains tepid, which keeps layoffs high.
