The US Supreme Court announced the death of Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, one of the four liberal members of the nine-judge court, at the age of 87, from complications from pancreatic cancer.Ginsburg’s death will give US President Donald Trump an opportunity to choose a conservative judge in her place, which will upset the court’s balance between liberals and conservatives, and affect many important cases in the country for years.

Supreme Court judges are appointed for life or until they decide on their own to retire.Democrats’ calls began for the new president to choose a judge to replace Ginsburg, that is, after the November elections, in an attempt to block Trump and choose him as a third judge during his presidency.

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the new judge should be appointed by the next president.

For his part, the leader of the Republican majority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, said that the House is ready to vote for Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court.Trump praised what he described as the “wonderful life” that Ginsburg led after he received news of her death from journalists while participating in a campaign rally in Minnesota.

For his part, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said that the appointment of a successor to Ginsburg should wait until after the election of a new president.
