Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, four-time Formula One champion, joined Racing Point from next season, the British team announced Thursday.
Vettel, 33, won four titles in a row (2010-2013), with Red Bull before moving to Ferrari, but the latter preferred not to renew the contract between them. It is scheduled to leave the red team at the end of the current season after six years spent with him without being able to win any title.
“The signing of Sebastian is a clear indication of the team’s ambition to become one of the most serious competitors in this field,” Racing Point, who will switch to Aston Martin starting next year, said in his statement.
The team, owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, who is also a shareholder in Aston Martin, announced on Wednesday that the contract of Mexican Sergio Perez would not be renewed from next year, paving the way for Vettel’s arrival.
Vettel is ranked thirteenth in the World Drivers’ Championship standings with only 16 points, after eight stages, far behind British Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, the leaders (164 points).
Ferrari is suffering a lot this season, as its cars appeared far from their peers, especially Mercedes, as they did not live up to expectations, and the team ranks the driver in the world championship for the constructors’ category with 61 points, while Racing Point comes fourth.
Vettel will be in the British team with Lance Stroll, son of the team’s owner, who is currently fourth in the tournament.
