Today, Monday, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia issued a surprise decision regarding hosting the G20 summit scheduled for next November, indicating that it will be held via the Internet instead of a meeting of leaders of the world’s richest countries in Riyadh, as was scheduled before the Corona pandemic crisis.

The Saudi government said, in a statement, that it will hold the summit of the leaders of the G20 countries for the year 2020, by default, on the date specified on the 21st and 22nd of November.

The statement indicated that the G20 countries will focus during the next summit on “protecting lives, restoring growth by dealing with and overcoming the pandemic, and recovering better, by addressing the weaknesses that emerged during the pandemic, and enhancing long-term resilience.”

The Corona epidemic prompted the group to hold all its video-conference meetings since March, when Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz presided over an emergency virtual summit, in which world leaders discussed the global response to the epidemic that killed more than a million people and hit the economies of the world countries.

Pressure on Riyadh
The kingdom, whose human rights record has received international condemnation, expanded its image and supported jobs and investments ahead of hosting the summit, investing in sports and entertainment events.

But human rights groups urged the G20 countries to put pressure on the kingdom. Against the background of intensifying its security campaign against dissenting voices by imprisoning activists, journalists and political opponents

In this context, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio withdrew recently. From the “Urban 20” summit hosted by Saudi Arabia for mayors of major cities in the G20. Signed calls to boycott the event that coincides with the anniversary of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

De Blasio’s announcement came amid calls from international organizations to boycott the event. In solidarity with Khashoggi, who was killed in his country’s consulate in Istanbul, and in opposition to human rights violations.
